Each sheet is formed by hand at the vat, dried on a mud-brick wall and then burnished with an agate stone until the surface takes ink without feathering. The A5 size is the one calligraphers reach for when they want to practise a single line, write a letter that will outlast them, or paint a small study. Expect gentle variation in tone and thickness from sheet to sheet: that is the mark of the hand, not a flaw.

Silk Paper Sheets, A5

A4 sheets cut from full folios after polishing, so every sheet keeps at least one natural deckled edge. The surface is smooth enough for a fine qalam and absorbent enough for watercolour and gouache washes. Artists use them for finished pieces; designers use them for menus, certificates and short print runs on a letterpress.

The whole sheet, exactly as it comes off the reed mould and the drying wall. Hold a folio to the window and you can see the cloud of mulberry fibres inside it. We polish folios on request; left unpolished, they are soft and toothy, ideal for printmaking, chine-colle and large brush work. Shipped flat between boards.

Sixty-four pages of unpolished mulberry paper with enough tooth for pencil, charcoal and dry brush, sewn with an exposed Coptic stitch so the book lies completely flat. The cover is two layers of our heaviest sheet, pressed together while still damp and coloured with a walnut-husk dye.

Mulberry Sketchbook

Made at the request of the calligraphers who visit us. Every page is stone-polished so the qalam glides and the ink sits crisply on the surface, then the book is sewn along a single fold with indigo-dyed thread. The proportions follow the traditional page used for practice sheets, a little taller than A5.

Calligrapher's Practice Book

Ninety-six pages of lightly polished paper inside a soft cover dyed in an indigo vat in our courtyard. A long cotton tie wraps the journal closed, so loose tickets and pressed leaves stay inside. The cover darkens and softens with handling, like a good leather bag.

In Uzbekistan the pomegranate stands for abundance and a full house, so it has always belonged at weddings. Each invitation is a polished card with its deckled edge dipped in a dye made from pomegranate rind, paired with a matching envelope and a deep red wax seal. Cards arrive blank for your own printing or calligraphy, or we can arrange printing for you.
